Alcohol and College Students

Nearly half (48 percent) of all of the alcohol consumed by students

attending 4-year colleges is consumed by underage students.

The average college student spends $450 on text books each year....and $900 on alcohol.

As many as 70% of college students admit to having engaged in sexual activity primarily as a result of being under the influence of alcohol, or to having sex they wouldn't have had if they had been sober.

90% of all campus rapes occur when alcohol has been used by either the assailant or the victim.

Female college freshman are at the highest risk for sexual assault

between the first day of school and Thanksgiving break.

Credit Cards and Tuition

The average undergraduate carries $3,173 in credit card debt.  In 2004, the avereage was $2,169.

College seniors graduated with an average of $4,139 in credit card debt, up 44% from 2004.  Freshman debt jumped 27% to $2,038 during that same five year stretch.

Since 1999, tuition and fees at public four-year colleges have climbed 50%.

In 2008, students charged an average of $2,200 in educational expenses to cards, up 134% from four years earlier.

There is more than $143 billion in financial aid available each year.

Going to college out-of-state increases the cost by $10,200 per student, on average. (www.collegeboard.com)
